About PSGBeginner

Welcome to PSGBeginner, your destination for free video lessons and resources for learning to play the pedal steel guitar. The focus is on providing a detailed plan of lessons, tutorials and tips to give you a thorough foundation to get you up and running and playing country and western music on this iconic instrument. Don't let the name fool you, though, because there are resources here that are useful to both new and experienced players alike.

There are so many people who deserve credit and profuse thanks for all the free steel guitar resources on the web, I can't possibly name them all. Of course the late Bobby Lee, the man who brought us the steelguitarforum web site, should be remembered. Then there are many people who made or make video lessons. Those channels whose contents we have used are linked below. The videos you see used on this site are only part of the total offerings by these teachers. Check out their channels for even more.

Jesse Leite made a great Chord/Fretboard manual, and Kyle O'Neal made an introduction to the Nashville number system.  Greg Cutshaw has built a very informative web site with many tab lessons with sound files, among other things and Richard Sinkler has a web site which features Mickey Adams videos organized by subject. New Baptist Church of Marion IL made the Steelchord program available on their web site.  Yours truly, Dave Dube has collected and indexed these materials  and created this site.

Steve Benzian made an outstanding video series that really gives insight into how to play. He takes you from basics about the pedals, levers and techniques right through breaking down a song and working up an arrangement. PSGBeginner now features Steve's course.

Jordan Stern, aka Professor HonkyTonk, developed a beginners pedal steel course which teaches the basics and then applies it to learning a song. He also provides tab and backing tracks for it. His YouTube page and other web site offerings are high quality and of interest to country music fans.

In addition to the video collection, the site now includes text-based courses from Sho-Bud and MSA, and Dave Magram's excellent Blocking Guide.

Last but not least, is a new video credits list, organized by topic, which also provides direct links to these channels for even more content.
